School System in the UK

Post Wed Nov 17, 2010 2:05 pm

Hello,

My family are moving to the UK in the next 4-5 months, and we have a son who is currently 3 1/2 (4 in June).

From my research thus far, I understand that the UK offers free part time Preschool? Is that correct?

However, unlike in Canada where Kindergarden begins at age 4, their P1 level does not begin until 4 1/2 or 5?

Can someone shed a little clarification on this for me, or whether I am understanding it correctly? Obviously Daycare/Nursery fees are very expensive, so determining when our son will be in full-time school is important to our move, etc.

Just an aside, both my son and I have full unrestricted British citizenship. So with regards to any "immigration" problems, there should be none.

Thanks for your help! I am sure I will have many many more questions in the future :)

Depending when your son turns 4 he can start Reception =kindergarden, but yes you are right he does qualify for 5 free session of nursery/pre-school.
