As someone who has spent some time on the highway between Escondido and Huatulco this may not be such a bad thing?
During the day it's one highway, after dark it's something completely different!
The road has virtually no straight, flat sections as it winds along the coast. Left, right, up, down, no street lights and transport trucks and buses all combine to make this an "interesting" rollercoaster ride.
It wouldn't be so scary if people followed the speed limits, but they don't. After dark busses and transports will pass you ANYWHERE along the road; blind corners are my personal favorite. Being passed by 75 feet of truck, around a blind corner, withy only the coastal cliff on the other side for safety is an experience you won't soon forget.
And don't stop if you do happen to see someone who has been hit on the side of the road; if you're the only one there when the federalies arrive, it may be you who gets blamed.
As for due process, some things in Mexico may never change.
Welcome to the last of the "wild west".
