Our 23 yr old daughter is seriously considering returning to Winnipeg, live with her older brother (who did not move to the USA with us over 10 yrs. ago), work part-time and attend university (U of M). Once she arrives at the border, are there any papers she needs to present? Can she simply say that she's returning home to live with her brother, intending to work and regain her resident status and eventually attend school? We're all Canadian citizens, and we all have Green Cards except for my son who, as previously mentioned, did not like the idea of moving to the USA.
Thank you so much for any advice you may be able to provide.

She shouldn't have any problems at all returning to Canada. She may have to fill in a customs declaration form for her personal goods, but shouldn't have to pay taxes or duty on anything.

Is her Canadian passport current, or would she need to get a new one? Does she have her Canadian birth certificate and other Canadian ID?

Once she arrives, she'll have to renew her provincial healtcare card, which will probably take up to 3 months or so, and she may want to get supplemental insurance for the interim.

Thank you, Reba
Her Canadian passport is current and she does have her Canadian birth certificate. Fortunately, she's not planning to take a lot of her stuff back home; her computer was the first thing on her list! Thank you again for answering our questions.

Hi Marissa,
I'm a Winnipeger -- so "welcome home" to your daughter! Getting her MB health care reassigned should be as easy as a phone call, however, as Reba mentioned, I think there is a 3 mo residency constraint, so if her health care from the States doesn't cover her during that time, then yes, something other is recommended.
I would remind her to add some good winter clothes to the list of what to pack. We have been at a balmy -1 C for the last few days, but it's January -- that is sure to plumet dramatically soon! Smile

Blessings,
Allyssa
