Seeking Advice

Postby billymac22 on Tue Jul 24, 2007 9:17 am

Ok, so my girlfriend and I are moving to AUS in October of this year, we are slightly torn on where to go. We are moving for a year or more, I have my holiday visa and she will be getting some sort of visa not sure which yet as she will be studying come February. We were planning on going to Melbourne until February then relocating to Brisbane, it seemed perfect I have to switch jobs every 6 months and she would be starting school in Brisbane in Feb, but the more research I do I notice that Melbourne is "cold" in relation to Brisbane. Although "cold" is still above 10 degrees, part of why we are moving is to escape the never ending winter that has plagued us in Nova Scotia for the past 2 years.

so. Is it really that cold in Melbourne from October to Feb? Would it be considerably warmer in Brisbane for these months?

Ideally we would like to experience living in as much of AUS as possible which is why I am so torn.

Cheers,

"Is it really that cold in Melbourne from October to Feb?"

I think you have your seasons mixed up. Oct to Feb is SUMMER in OZ, and thus Melbourne is hot (25 deg c). Brisbane is hotter of course, but the only time Melbourne is 'cold' is in the May-Aug wintertime.

Its not that I got the seasons mixed up, I went on the Australian Climate and weather website and it shows last years temperatures for each day of every month, and it seemed Oct to Dec there was only the occasional day(once or twice a month) where the temperature was above 20 degrees, which seemed cold because it is the summer months.

you asked about Oct to Feb, and the average max is ~23. Jan-Feb is ALWAYS hot (have you seen the Australian Open?).

you want real heat move further north.

I have lived in Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Sydney and Cairns. Summer in Melbourne can be warm - mid 20's (celcius) but if you are wanting consistent warm then I would recommend Brisbane or Perth. Brisbane is more humid and can get quite hot, Perth is dry and often reaches 40 in the summer. Bit far for most travellers as most stick to the East Coast. Shame as Western Australia is a great place to get away from the crowds if that's what you are after. Anyways - I digress from climate. Personally - if I had a choice - I would choose Brisbane.
