Sheffield, good? Bad?

Post Thu Jun 24, 2010 2:54 pm

I'm thinking of living in Manchester or Sheffield when I head over to the U.K, just wanted to get some opinions if anyone has lived there. The prices just seem very affordable for renters.

Thanks!!

Hey, I am not so sure about Manchester. Has a bit of a poor reputation but I havnt spent any time there beyond the airport. I did, live in Sheffield for a few years and I have to say that I really liked it. There are of course good and bad areas, but in general its a great town with everything I wanted. Night life can be a bit 'crazy' when compared with Canada. West st. on the weekends will seem a bit wild. There are 2 large universities in a fairly small city.
Norfolk park..fancy, leafy. Broomhill..semi leafy, close to U of Sheff. Hunters Bar..funky, studenty, lively. City Centre..Lots of new flats, cool area.

Sheffield is a beautiful city. Green, with gorgeous redevelopment in the centre. Has a cultural life - theatres, galleries; the music scene is fantastic, everyone plays some kind of instrument; 2 universities; most cuisines available.

People are lovely, down-to-earth, really warm and welcoming, particularly compared to Londoners (well that's my main comparison).

S is near the Peak District too, which is just breathtaking - gentle green hills/valleys, dotted with purple heather. Instantly calming. Hiking is big.

Would live there if life didn't take me elsewhere.

I've lived in Sheffield for many years and as I am very familiar with Vancouver that if you like living in Van then you will definitely like Sheffield, Great town center, good music scene and generally a nice city to live in, also not far from major towns such as Manchester, Nottingham etc.

Sheffield is a great city with 2 big Universities and lots going on. I lived in Manchester for 3 years and loved it. There are areas of Manchester, like an city which would not be ideal to live in but it has so much to offer and I would highly recommend both cities.

Vision for Education places teachers in schools all over England. We have offices in Sheffield, Manchester, Nottingham, Lincolnshire, London, Newcastle, Teesside and Cambridgeshire.

Manchester is by far the bigger city, and has quite a big city feel.

Somehow Sheffield feels a lot smaller than it actually is and hasn't become trendy in the way Manchester has.

Whichever you go for, they're within easy reach of each other.
