Hello!

In one year I will be marrying a Brit and moving from Winnipeg to Scotland. We will be in the UK for at least 5 years, so I would love to take a lot of my personal belongings with me. Does anyone have any recommendations for reliable companies that ship door-to-door? I would want to take a couple of furniture items (desk, chair) books, flower pots and clothing. Probably not enough to fill a shipping container, and nothing that would need to arrive really quickly.

Thanks!

Hey Dandyday:

We too just made the trek from Ontario to Edinburgh.
We used a company called the MI Group - which is a mid-high end packing and moving company door to door, and full removal (of packing debris). I am pretty confident that they have a few offices across canada, including calgary and van. Their services were fantastic, and comparable to other companies. Our belongings took about 6 weeks. Watch out for companies which have lower face costs, but are not giving you a private shipping container-- some companies will do what is referred to as a "groupage" which means that they wait until the container is full before they ship it, taking sometimes up to a year.

Any other queries let me know.
Scotland is fantastic!

You probably already know this but don't take anything big with you (bed, settee, table)the houses and flat are in generally quite small or anything electrical as they won't work here . Shocked

Just take what you need, I had a friend who sold their big furnitures. Most places there are small and sometimes already furnished.

When I moved to Scotland I shipped over allot of my belongings. My advice to you is to really scrutinize what you are bringing over as shipping costs are astronomical and you will probably be paying more then the actual value of what you are shipping. I wouldn't even consider bringing anything like furniture over, either sell it off or if it has some great sentimental value then either put it in storage or have a friend or family member hold onto it for you. If you are dead set on still bring the whole kit and caboodle then I would advise waiting awhile after you move as your needs of what you want to bring over could be allot different once your in country for awhile.Hope this helps.

...I am back from Scotland now and planning on moving to England next year and from my experiences I will be moving over with only 1 suitcase of a reasonable size and thats it.
