shipping companies and what to ship

Post Sat Apr 02, 2005 3:46 pm

Hi there,

What shipping companies did you use to ship your stuff from Canada to UK? Any recommendations, or ones to avoid? I am only moving for a year so am not shipping everything, but would like to take my guitars and my clothes.

Regarding the clothes though, I've heard recently that it's cheaper just to buy new clothes in London, as it's one thing that's quite cheap. I heard previously that everything was expensive, and given that for the first while I'll be living off my CDN dollar I thought I better ship my clothes over. What would you recommend?

thanks,
Geoff

EVERYTHING (exept wine, actually..) is expensive here.

I never buy anything when it comes to clothes because I go to Quebec once a year and for the price of what I can buy in designer shops in Montreal, I get poor quality stuff here.

I say pack the clothes you really cannot part with in your suitcases and buy everything else you need when you get to the UK.

Just to give you an idea. I sent two small 15"X15" boxes, weighing a total of about 86 lbs. and it cost almost $700.00. It took 5 days to arrive. It would have been cheaper just to re-buy everything. I won't do this again. Live and learn.

I enquired about shipping some furniture and the price is ridiculous. Can't remember the exact figure, but I said forget it.

We used a guy in Toronto who has a place at Dufferin and Eglington. Will try find his name. We had a 20 ft container and shipped everything from a three bedroom house for 2500 canadian. Try and find out about sharing a container it is much cheaper.

My price was by air, I should have mentioned. When I looked into shipping by boat, it was going to take too long.
Depends how much of a hurry you're in, I suppose.

I sent it before I left so time wasn't an issue.
