Shipping to the tropics?

Hi all! I am moving to the Caymans in 4 weeks (yikes!) I haven't hired a shipping company yet, I got quotes but they're all very different! I'd like to know how much others have paid to get to that...

Hi all!

I am moving to the Caymans in 4 weeks (yikes!) I haven't hired a shipping company yet, I got quotes but they're all very different! I'd like to know how much others have paid to get to that part of the world from central Canada.

Also, any other tips about moving or living in the Caymans is greatly welcome!

Thank you!

Well I would suggest trimming down any excess stuff like furniture - way too much hassle.
Take clothes mainly, everything else you you buy there.

It also helps (greatly) if your sponsored company is willing to pay for the cargo trip.
Mine offered a $5k allowance for cargo, & we just barely made it.

It depends on your visa term, but I would suggest selling your stuff there (@ home), you won't be needing it. If Cayman is anything like BDA, your furniture will ruin from mold & salt-air rot. Buy cheap used furniture when you arrive.
We have a garage-sale type website here (www.e-moo.com), this is where most of the stuff is bought/sold, maybe CAY has the near same?

P.S. good luck & try to have fun with your journeys.

Thanks BB for the quick reply! I am only bringing personal stuff, apparently all the apartments come fully furnished, so I really don't need much. My company will reimburse me for the shipping but that's part of the problem: they didn't give me any amount or indication of what an acceptable amount would be (otherwise I'd base myself on that - now I have to make the judgment call myself Confused )

I can't wait to leave and actually get there - I'm especially looking forward to all this administrative/organization stuff being done! I'll need a few days at the beach to recover from all this work!
