I have lived in North Africa though not in Morocco. For me, as much as I prepared for the change, there was definite culture shock. However, living in a major city rather than in a rural area, and being there with a Moroccan husband will make it easier. First, are you Muslim? If you follow Islam, you will probably have an easier time understanding aspects of the culture since (by what I saw) religion is very influential in society. Second, have you ever travelled there before? If not and if you are planning a permanent move, it might be worth going for a trip if for nothing else than to get your feet wet. And visit the area that you might be living in -- not the tourist strip!
As a blonde Canadian Christian there were quite a few aspects that made me stand out from the crowd. That was hard to get used to in many ways. However, I also knew that it was the right place for me to be at that time and so I trusted in that even when it was hard to be somewhere so different from what I knew.
Overall, mine was an amazing expereince and I developed such a strong love for North Africa and tons of life-long friends --I truly left some of my heart there. (but it wasn't instant attraction!)
Feel free to PM me if you want more details. There are also others on this forum who are Canadians living in Morocco. You are not alone!
Bless you,
Allyssa
