So I got myself into a situation.

I'm not asking really what I should have done right to begin with. I obviously understand completely where I may have messed up and I'm now just trying to generalize the situation and figure it out so I don't along the lines screw up my life anymore

In August 2008 I came over the border to shadow at a school for SIX months. They let me go through and they didn't lecture me on how long I was allowed to stay or not. The only thing they wanted to check was confirmation I had been allowed to do so from the school and a receipt of my bank account so they knew I could survive while I was here.

They never gave me a date or a time-line, and I never looked into it till later.

I ended up staying in the USA, finding my partner, making friends and not thinking about it. I'm engaged, and my life is situated here.

How do I resolve this. I obviously want to be here in the states, but I obviously screwed up. How can I get citizenship or anything?

I'm pretty sure there is no way unless I go home for a VERY long time. Keep in mind I am engaged, but I am also a gay male -- makes it even more complicated.

I'm assuming ur partner is of the opposite sex, if so, you should be in luck! Do NOT leeave the USA!!! You will do what is called Adjust of status (AOS) As long as you had NO intention of staying inthe USA when you entered, one can AOS!! Just do NOT leave until you get ur greencard, which if all goes well, takes anywhere from 3-6 months, or can be longer/shorter! search AOS on here as Nelsona as listed the steps on a few other posts or goto http://www.visajourney.com/forums/forum ... ist-visas/

just do NOT leave the USA--that includes going to canada! The problem isn't leaving, as thats too easy---its the getting back into the USA that will be the problem until you get the green card!
