So stressful... Want to stay in the States for 4-5 months

Post Mon Jul 07, 2008 4:20 pm

Hello there, I'm currently living in British Columbia but my fiance is in Pennsylvania working there. I am in college taking a course on Medical Transcription, which I take at home and am able to finish college wherever I can find an Internet connection. I wanted to finish my college in the States and when it is completed, I will most likely move back to British Columbia. I will be travelling there by Greyhound, so land, and I don't think I will need a passport. I want to go there as soon as I possibly can but I am not sure what paperwork needs to be done and all of that stuff. My fiance makes enough to support us both, too. Please help me! My course is done in October, and I would probably be coming back in December. Thanks!

Is your fiance American or Canadian? If Canadian, what is his immigration status in the US?

If you're just going for less than 6 months, and you can prove ties to Canada and that you'll be returning technically, you *should* be good to go. Make sure you have a return ticket and not a one way (Greyhound tickets aren't dated I don't think).

However, if your classes are all on-line, and you don't have a job in Canada, nor a lease or mortgage on a home, you may have difficulty proving ties to Canada, and you may be denied entry and turned back. Or you may not. Its totally up to the border official.

Btw.

With the increasing security threat, I believe Canadian requires a passport to cross US border including land.
Please double check with US immigration.

You still only need a passport if you're flying. The requirement for land crossings was again extended until next year.
