social security number

Post Tue Jan 22, 2008 8:45 pm

I lived in USA 30 years ago with ex husband with alien status, I had a number and worked. My question is this number still active.
If it is not OK for me to work, can you be married while you wait for the application to go through to work.
I have waited long enough for this wonderful man, don't want to wait much longer.
If anyone can give me any info I would appreciate it.

If you have an SSN, it is yours til death, so yes, it is very likely still "active"

I'm not sure what you mean by "can you be married while you wait for the application to go through to work?" however. Are you in the US again now, did you get married to a US citizen? Or are you in Canada and wish to be married to an American?

The number is still a valid number but it may not be valid for employment, due to the new E-verify system.
