Social Security Number

Postby rmyers1000 » Thu Apr 30, 2009 11:35 am

Hello all,

Does anyone have experience of applying for jobs within a city department/govt program?

I'm applying for a number of these - generally requiring an employment application form to be filled out - asking for a social security number, which I don't have yet. I get a feeling that this will strongly count against me - any thoughts?

My target is a Vocational Counsellor, which is on the TN list.

Thanks.

That's very odd because they should not be asking for an SSN on a job application form. I think that might even be illegal. At the very least, it's not a good idea unless you (in a general sense, not specifically 'you') want to open yourself up to identity theft. I would just leave the SSN field blank. Even as someone who HAS an SSN, I would never put it on a job application form. They only need to know it if they have actually hired you and are putting you on their payroll. Otherwise, it's none of their business.

You don't need to provide a SSN on an application, and they're not supposed to hold that against you either.
