Social work job in a specific area/French canadian under TN

Post Tue Jan 22, 2008 6:29 pm

Hi!
I would like to find a job in the US, I completed my education in a social work related program and would like to know how to find a job in a specific area. I have been there before to visit and made many friends, but i dont know if i should use them to help me find a job or if that would eventually play against me as it would show the immigration services that i have some ties in that community already (which could maybe lead them to believe my stay wouldnt be temporary).
I would also like to know if I need to translate all of my paperwork officially (because I am from Quebec and everything I have regarding school for example is in French). I can do it myself and provide both versions but i dont know if its a good idea. And about that, I was concerned that the fact that our shcool system is different wouldnt be in my favor because little details could majke the officer believe that i am not qualified for whatever job.
Does anyone have tips on getting a job in the US while in Canada? Is anyone a French Canadian working in the US under the TN visa?
Thank you

HI there, welcome to the board.

You said your education is a *social work related* program, but to get the TN visa you actually are required to have a BSW or MSW plus whatever state registration is required for social workers. They were very strict about this when I applied about 10 years ago and I'm sure they are as strict or more now.

Sorry- can't help you on the french stuff. Good luck!

You don't need a degree in social work or a license. Every TN social worker I've had did not have a social work degree. If the NAFTA required a degree in social work, it would have provided so. See also the OOH: http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos060.htm.

That link doesn't work, could you try again?

I look at the government site about 2 months ago and it did say a BSW was required. When I got my visa, I was also required to be licensed as required by the state (so if a state doesn't require it, it is not needed).

NAFTA Job List
Appendix 1603.D.1 – Professions Covered by NAFTA

This page provides the current listing of professional occupations, with minimum education requirements and alternative credentials, required for admission to the U.S. under the terms of NAFTA.

Social worker
Baccalaureate or Licenciatura degree.

(In case, like me, you don't know what licenciatura is, its an honours degree).

The Licenciatura is a Mexican degree.

No social work degree or license required.

Help... Please... I recently contacted U.S. immigration (very rude and not too helpful) and they told me that if I wish to apply for a TN visa as a social worker I must have a Bachelors Degree. I asked if a Bachelors degree in Human Services would be appropriate and they said no, it must be a Bachelors in Social Work...But yet when I searched many U.S. job postings for social workers, degrees in human services are accepted. What is accepted?

Hi Amelia!

As for your concern about translating your school records, which is necessary, to prove your educational background, you should always go to a professional for a certified translation for something this important.

I work with a company called FoxTranslate and they specialize in immigration document translation. They make everything simple, and as opposed to the other certified translation services out there, they won't make you get a notarization on your translation, as USCIS does not even require it. Just about every other translation service for immigration just does that so they can charge like $80 or more a page.

Try foxtranslate.com

Best of luck!
