Hi!
I would like to find a job in the US, I completed my education in a social work related program and would like to know how to find a job in a specific area. I have been there before to visit and made many friends, but i dont know if i should use them to help me find a job or if that would eventually play against me as it would show the immigration services that i have some ties in that community already (which could maybe lead them to believe my stay wouldnt be temporary).
I would also like to know if I need to translate all of my paperwork officially (because I am from Quebec and everything I have regarding school for example is in French). I can do it myself and provide both versions but i dont know if its a good idea. And about that, I was concerned that the fact that our shcool system is different wouldnt be in my favor because little details could majke the officer believe that i am not qualified for whatever job.
Does anyone have tips on getting a job in the US while in Canada? Is anyone a French Canadian working in the US under the TN visa?
Thank you

HI there, welcome to the board.

You said your education is a *social work related* program, but to get the TN visa you actually are required to have a BSW or MSW plus whatever state registration is required for social workers. They were very strict about this when I applied about 10 years ago and I'm sure they are as strict or more now.

Sorry- can't help you on the french stuff. Good luck!

You don't need a degree in social work or a license. Every TN social worker I've had did not have a social work degree. If the NAFTA required a degree in social work, it would have provided so. See also the OOH: http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos060.htm.

That link doesn't work, could you try again?

I look at the government site about 2 months ago and it did say a BSW was required. When I got my visa, I was also required to be licensed as required by the state (so if a state doesn't require it, it is not needed).

NAFTA Job List
Appendix 1603.D.1 – Professions Covered by NAFTA

This page provides the current listing of professional occupations, with minimum education requirements and alternative credentials, required for admission to the U.S. under the terms of NAFTA.

Social worker
Baccalaureate or Licenciatura degree.

(In case, like me, you don't know what licenciatura is, its an honours degree).

The Licenciatura is a Mexican degree.

No social work degree or license required.
