Hello, does anyone know what the job market is like for the UK for Canadian social workers and would it be hard to get a work permit? Many thanks for any info anyone may have.

I've also been told starting salaries for social workers is 30,000 pounds. Is this reasonable for life in London or Manchester?

For what I can see (newspaper, job website) , social workers start more at around £20 000, I think £30 000 is probably for experienced social workers (4-5 years experience).

But with £30000 it's a good wage for Manchester (London is quite expensive)

I'm trying to figure out what a take home pay would be if making £20-30,000. Are there taxes like here in Canada, and pension and everything else under the sun the deduct.

I found a site but I'm not sure how accurate is and no one replied to my previous post.

Social worker in UK or CA

Post Tue Mar 18, 2008 2:48 am

Excuse me, can anyone told me that what’s the job market in Canada? I’m a social worker from Hong Kong. I have 10 years working experience. I want to know more about the job market in Canada as well as UK. Is that easy to get work permit? How’s the salary? What’s the qualification requirement?

Many thanks.

Social work job market in the UK is great. There is about a 15-20% vacancy rate in the field and getting a work permit shouldn't be much of a problem.

In London, to start, you will make at the minimum £28,000 (certainly enough to live comfortably if you share a flat or house).

Outside of london, salaries start as low as £20,000, but of course the cost of living is much lower.

Many councils are offering *golden handshakes* of £1000-5000 and retention bonuses of £1000/year. I get a lease car as part of my salary, plus they paid my relocation expenses and rent for 6 months.

**To all those who send PMs about this topic- sorry- have been away for a while, but if you still need the info, let me know**

Probation Openings

Post Sun May 04, 2008 2:42 pm

I've had a fair bit of experience working in the Probation field in the UK (SW qualification used to be a requirement for the job). I'm back in Canada now but am thinking of temp/permanent employment in the UK after my early retirement (could be as soon as next summer). There are a number of agencies that have shown an interest, so it could probably be done.I'd like to hear from any fellow "corrections" folk either in or thinking of moving to the UK.
