So I was in the US last week and I called the SSA (1-800-772-1213 - don't even bother unless you are a very, very patient person) about the status of my SSN. This was quite an interesting conversat...

OK another question then.

a Canadian who lived in states came back to Canada. I am hoping my ssn card is in a box but if it isn't how do I get it again.
I will have to change it to my maiden name anyways.
Once I get to move down to Mn. can I apply for green card, get married and wait
Of do I have to wait to get married until it goes through.
Also when I do move down do I have to get my old papers allowing me into states.
This could be a problem I am sure the ex did not keep them. Now can I get a copy of those papers and how do I go about it.
I really do appreciate this everyone.
I really would love to get married and wait for the green card. I have waited all my life for this wonderful man and I am not getting any younger.
Char

If you've lost your card you have to apply for a replacement from the SSA. As far as working goes, you have to be in legal status before the SSA will mark the card as valid for employment in their system.

There are various other threads that deal with the whole marriage thing.

Apparently the SSA is now worried that if Congress mandates that all employers use the E-verify system, their offices won't be able to cope with all the people correcting errors and doing name changes on their SSN cards: http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2008/apr/16/lin...y-just-get-longer

I thought the comment about Arizona was quite interesting, have to wait and see what happens.

Funny, I read here once how you had to re-new your SSN with a TN renewal. So after my TN was renewed I grabbed a magazine and all the patience in me and sat in a Social Security Admin office, listened to this one dude talking to the only lady working there for over 20 minutes on all his prescription needs, going into creepy details about all his physical ailments and such, of course speaking extremely loud so we all could hear (ugh) to finally get to the service counter and be told: "Oh no, you don't need to renew, it's all done automatically!" So, honestly, at this point I really don't know what is needed or not!
