Apparently the SSA is now worried that if Congress mandates that all employers use the E-verify system, their offices won't be able to cope with all the people correcting errors and doing name changes on their SSN cards: http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2008/ap ... get-longer

I thought the comment about Arizona was quite interesting, have to wait and see what happens.

Funny, I read here once how you had to re-new your SSN with a TN renewal. So after my TN was renewed I grabbed a magazine and all the patience in me and sat in a Social Security Admin office, listened to this one dude talking to the only lady working there for over 20 minutes on all his prescription needs, going into creepy details about all his physical ailments and such, of course speaking extremely loud so we all could hear (ugh) to finally get to the service counter and be told: "Oh no, you don't need to renew, it's all done automatically!" So, honestly, at this point I really don't know what is needed or not!

I got the same answer as MarieR19 except for me it was the agent on the phone. Not sure what to do. I got my first TN in 2007, the second in 2008 and the third in 2009. The third time however the case was slightly different. My old job ended on Dec 31, 2008 while TN was to expire only in Sept 2009. However,In Jan 09, I surrendered my 1-94 at the border and re-entered the US legally. Then in March 09 I went back to Canada to get my 3rd TN for a new employer. Not sure what I need to do now. Should I still take my passport and 1-94 to the local SSA ? The agent on the phone was behaving like I was crazy to want to update or change anything. Did not even accept a change of address as I was not getting a benefit.

They specifically told me on the phone that you did have to do it, I was quite specific with the question and it was a long conversation as I recall because I asked them in detail how it all worked. Perhaps since I wrote that they have automated it as DHS does notify them. Or maybe what they told me was BS, dunno. Perhaps I underestimate the efficiency of the SSA. If you renew your status before it expires, obviously your SSN will still be marked as valid anyway.

I dread to think what happens in Arizona where they're all required to use E-verify.

I did read an article about how they were looking to create a more efficient system so perhaps this is something that's been changed.

I have a slightly different situation. I have changed from a TN-1 visa to a J-2 visa and recently applied for a EAD. On the EAD application, I gave them my existing SSN that I received when I had the TN-1 visa. Do I need to go back to the SSA office and advise them of my EAD so that they can update the records? Also, I have moved in the past couple of months, should I update my address with the SSA office as well?

Thanks!

The SSA is not concerned with your immigration status. You card correctly states that you need DHS work authorization, and TN and EAD are exactly that.

Once SSA issue the card, they don't have any further interface with DHS.

You don't have to do it, the impression I'm getting is that they are overloaded with work and have decided to stop asking people, however the SSN will probably be marked as invalid when the TN-1 status was marked as invalid, so if the employer uses E-verify it might come up as being invalid and you will have to go to the SSA office to get it sorted.
