You don't have to do it, the impression I'm getting is that they are overloaded with work and have decided to stop asking people, however the SSN will probably be marked as invalid when the TN-1 status was marked as invalid, so if the employer uses E-verify it might come up as being invalid and you will have to go to the SSA office to get it sorted.
