Starting to sound impossible!

Post Mon Nov 24, 2008 1:51 pm

OK .I've read through (what feels like) 100's of threads in regards to 'relocating' to the U.S. .and from the sounds of it .it starting to sound impossible! What's up with that?!?!

I have read through all the TN and H1 .and BS2 (ok .i made that one up) and I can't seem to find a fit.

I have worked in Corporate Retail (Head Office) for over 10 years .no formal university education. I currently work in the Loss Prevention/Operations sector. I am looking (wanting) to move to Florida (a) for broader job band (b) i hate winter. My current company does not have any U.S. store locations .so a transfer is out of the question .and like many others .I don't want to wait ump-teen years.

Is this impossible or what?!?! I know it is difficult to obtain company sponsership .but even if I do .without "a degree" is it useless?!?!?

Sorry for all the ramblings .just alittle sad.

Looking for sunny days.

Considering the job market these days, if you're looking "for a broader job band", the US is probably not your best bet. Why not try somewhere else in Canada, like BC or something. Warmer climate in Vancouver than TO.

Even if you did qualify, retail sales in the US fell off a cliff last month, expect heavy lay-offs after Christmas in the retail sector.

I always think Canadians who want better weather may be better served looking for jobs in the Caribbean, but retail would be tough.

Yeah, the US really isn't the land of milk and honey as the ads touted. :p

Some retailers aren't even waiting til after the New Year to lay off. A LOT of stores are shutting down before the end of December. I've recently seen a list of retailers that are either closing up entirely (Linens n' Things) and downsizing the number of stores considerably (The Gap/Old Navy, etc.). Its just not a pretty picture down here. Not anywhere. I would really rather go home to the snow and cold than stay here, but I'm kinda stuck :(

Take some time to do more research as the economy is really in a state of flux right now.
I don't know how Florida is doing at this point but since Texas is doing well, you might consider a place like San Antonio which is growing rapidly, has plenty of warm weather and it's a tourist city with lots of retail opportunities.
