Status change: TN to J2 , and TD to J1

My wife and I are staying in the US under TD and TN respectively.

My wife would be sponsored for J1 in few months. Then I would like to change my status to J2. My question is that would there be any issues when my wife tries to change her status from TD to J1 and my status to J2 from TN. What are the processes? Has anyone had the same situation before? Please share your experience.

The one issue that I see is that there will be a time gap after you get J2 status and before you get the EAD associated with your J2 status--and during that time period you will be unable to legally work (I don't know what the current processing times are). If all you want to do is continue in your current job, I don't see why you couldn't just stick with the existing TN and remain in your job without interruption. The J2-EAD could remain simply as 'Plan B' if you ever have trouble renewing your TN.

Of course I don't know all your circumstances. If you are moving to a new city to join your wife where she is going to be doing her J1, then it might take you awhile to find a new job anyways--in which case it might be easier to go the J2-EAD route--since the EAD, once you actually have it, will probably cause employers less consternation than a TN, and you'll need some status anyhow to keep you legal while you look for work.

At some time, I have to leave the current employer and move to my wife place and find a new job. But I was thinking, I could get the J2-EAD status while I am working with my current employer on TN.
But from your reply, I understand that will not be possible.

You should keep your TN until you get your J2 EAD, if you wish to work continuously.

There is no need for you to switch to J2 until you do not have TN job.
