Staying in the US - need help

Hi everyone

My son entered the US on September 20 of 2011 to visit a friend. He's still there and would like to stay as long as possible. From what I've been reading, he has to return to Canada after 180 days.

Need some advice as to what he can do to stay there longer, if at all he can. He was working off and on doing seasonal work with our family business but nothing steady before he left. He is helping his friend look after her 4 kids as well as doing housework and chores (kind of a "manny" lol) in exchange for free room and board. He has no other financial support - bank acct is at zero.

Does anyone have any advice? Are there extensions he can apply for to stay longer? Can he come back into Canada for a bit and then return to the US?

No. He must return to canada and stay for about the same time he left.
