staying more than 6 months

I am a Pro Golfer born in Canada, and I wanted to know the right way to go about staying in the U.S. longer than 6 months. I know I am allowed to stay for 6 months, either calender year or per visit, but in order to stay in the U.S. for more than six months would I need to file for a visa?

All Cdns can visit US for six months at a time. If you are thinking of working in US, then you need a work status (O or P) even for one day.
