Student Loan

Post Tue Dec 13, 2011 6:08 pm

Hello everyone!

Some advice needed from anyone who might have an idea: I have applied for a masters program in the UK... Just for fun, I really don't expect to get in... however, if I did--I'd be thrilled--but couldn't afford to go! lol! There is no funding for UK or international students for this particular program.

Could I apply for a student loan in the UK?

Many Thanks!
Krystina

As an immigrant, you're not allowed to have recourses to public funds, including student loans. Actually, to get your visa you'll need to show that you can pay the tuition fees plus your living costs.

what about if someone has an ancestry visa or by descent- a British passport or is an EU citizen from outside the UK - do they have immediate access to public funds that would include a student loan?

Yes, I have an Irish passport and a British passport. I don't know if that helps me out.

Any person subject to immigration control in the UK can't have access to public funds. As for Eu citizens, they can study in the UK provided they can support themselves in their studies and have comprehensive sickness insurance.

British passport holders are of course not subject to immigration control and can have recourse to public funds, including student loans.

I've been reading up on things more... Apparently there are no student loans for post grad studies. You have to do it privately through the bank.

Getting a bank loan in the UK means that I would have to live there for 3 years. Has anyone done this before? Does anyone know of a loophole?

Thanks!

Or there are Professional loans, I think someone said. Or a Career development loan. Again, the 3 year rule... Does anyone know how to get past it?

Can a school help you get a loan?... I don't know how they would, but they want their money just as much as a student wants to go.
