Student looking to move to Canada (Dual-Citizenship Help?!)

Post Fri Feb 20, 2009 7:33 pm

Hey all,

I have a couple of questions to ask about dual citizenship and I was hoping some people could help me! I hope I've posted this in the right forum... If not, please re-direct me!

I am currently 21 and in my final year of my undergraduate degree in the UK and when I graduate I am strongly considering a fresh start... Obv. to do this I have to weigh up my options and moving to Canada is one of them.

My background is that I was born in Ottawa (while my parents were out here as my dad was an attaché for the British RAF) and I lived there for ~3 years. Then when my dad left the services, they moved back to the UK and this is where I have been since. I have relatives out there and have been back many times on holiday all over the country and I love it.

The idea that I was eligible for dual citizenship has been thrown around by my parents for the past few years but I never really took it seriously until now. Currently I only hold a full British passport and I was wondering if I'm actually allowed to apply for a Canadian passport?

If so, is it really that easy? Could I then move out there and start afresh? How would I actually go about applying for a passport/dual citizenship?

I will have an engineering degree from a v. good UK university, what are jobs like for grads? If it's anything like England it's probably rubbish at the mo?

Clearly, I haven't done any full research into this and currently it's just a pipe-dream. So I any information whatsoever is greatly appreciated on anything related to dual citizenship/moving abroad!

Cheers,

Jamie

It sounds like you have a Canadian birth certificate, so it's pretty much just a case of sending in your passport application.

If you haven't got your birth certificate you can get one from here: https://www.orgforms.gov.on.ca/eForms/start.do

There are more engineering jobs in Canada (per capita) than the UK because of all the resource extraction industries. Assuming you can apply your knowledge to one of those fields. Lot of demand for engineers in local govt. too is my understanding given all the bridges that have been collapsing lately. They're building a lot of tunnels in BC at the moment as well.

There is more to moving, you need to fill in CBSA forms B4 and B4A to declare all your belongings, plus you will need to go to the Federal building when you arrive and get an SIN (equivalent of an NI card). And register for healthcare and get your DL swapped over.

Thanks a bunch Steve, that's all really useful!

I was definitely looking at the BC area and I had heard stories about there being more engineering jobs but I wasn't sure if it was all fairytales. It's reassuring to know it's true!

Thanks again,

Jamie
