student visa quick quesiton?

Post Wed Oct 29, 2008 7:26 am

Hello,

for the student visa, do you need to show funds for the entire program/living expenses, or just the first year?

I have 2 years left on a program if I went, and a wife/infant so that would be close to 50k total if i needed to show all, please advise, thanks.

I can't say for sure but I doubt you'd be expected to prove the whole two years worth of income.

I would imagine you'd need to be able to show you could cover the costs of school for the first year, and a reasonalbe amount of living expenses (6 months or so). You and your wife are allowed to work up to 20 hours a week on that visa so there's no need to have all that money up front.

Here's a quote from the immigration website:
You must maintain enough money to pay for travel, tuition and living expenses for yourself, your spouse and your dependent children for the duration of your stay in Australia.

Since it doesn't specify I would focus on the word "maintain". It doesn't say you need to bring it in. You just need enough to pay for school, rent & bills. So if you have enough to pay for school and a reasonable amount to get you started then that would probably be enough.

You dont need to show funds for anything, it asks if you CAN support yourself and pay for the entire program etc...You tick yes. Thats it.
