Studying cosmetology in MN

Postby dr.erin » Mon May 04, 2009 5:20 am

Hi there!

Currently in the process of applying to St. Paul College for cosmetology- Hair & Nail Tech.

Wondering if there's anyone on here that has gone through the same process, or has any info on studying trades in the U.S. Are the procedures for tech/comm. college any different than a regular uni? Also, how does the apprenticeship process work?
Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Assuming the school is approved to issue an I-20, it works basically the same way as it does for regular universities. You usually have to prove that you have enough money to support yourself for the duration of the program. Once you've been admitted, the college will send you the I-20 form which you will bring with you to the border.

As for the apprenticeship, you qualify for up to one year of what's called optional practical training after you finish your program. This will allow you to work in the US after you graduate. You will have to return to Canada at the end of that year.

Awesome- thanks so much.

What's the difference with an I-20 as opposed to an F-1? I'm waiting to hear back from them as I didn't see anything on their site in regards to international students- fingers crossed. Again, I appreciate the info. Cheers!

F-1 is the status you are in as an international student in the US. I-20 is the actual form they send you, which you need to get F-1 status (which is given to you when you go to the border). Usually you'll hear people talk about an F-1 visa, which is the stamp that most people need in their passports to study in the US. As a Canadian you don't need a visa to enter the US.

I-20 is the form issued by the college that allows you to apply for the student status, usually it's F-1 but in this case if you are actually doing an apprenticeship it might be M-1. I'm sure the admissions office can give you the lowdown.
