Studying in Canada

If we travel or live abroad, we usually come back to visit right? Here's a the place to meet other "re-pats" and Canadians who have returned.

Studying in Canada

Post Tue Feb 21, 2012 8:03 am

My daughter is a Canadian citizen and planning to return to Canada to pursue education in McGill university. We used to live in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. So my question is will my daughter be considered as an international student or a Canadian student regarding the fees for her university?
P.S. her high school degree will be from a Middle Eastern country.

Hi,

Your daughter is a Canadian citizen, presumably with a Canadian passport or birth certificate, and therefore will pay the out of province/Canadian rate of tuition at McGill, NOT international student rates. You do not have to live in Canada to be eligible for Canadian rates of tuition. She is not, however, eligible for Quebec rates of tuition. For that she would have to live in the province for a year without studying full-time. When I worked at the registrar's office in a university as an undergrad, I saw students who had never lived in Canada but who had Canadian passports and were granted local rates of tuition. You can confirm this by contacting the registrar's office.
