Switching from UK Work Permit to Ancestry Visa

Post Thu Oct 14, 2010 12:28 pm

I need some advice on switching from a uk work permit to an ancestry visa. I am a canadian currently working in the UK on the old Work Permit system (I came here in 2007). I am considering changing jobs and I hope to be able to come back to the uk to work (it feels like a second home now...and my other half is scottish!) If i quit my job, I have to go back to Canada... :(
I have a grandparent who was born in England, so I am wondering if there will be any issues applying for an ancestry visa having been here for 3 years on a work permit?? would i be able to go back to canada to apply for an ancestry visa while still on the previous work permit, then if it is issued go back to the uk and quit, or would i have to quit first, return to canada and then apply for an ancestry visa?
and how do you prove you are actively looking for work (one of the requirements for an ancestry visa)

any advice, or any feedback from anyone who has done something similar would be a great help! put my mind at ease!!
thanks soo much!

Unfortunately, you cannot switch to a UK Ancestry visa from within the UK. You will have to leave the UK before your current work permit expires and then apply from Canada.
