Hi Everyone,

This is my first post on this forum so apologies if it's been covered before!

I have an opportunity to move from Vancouver to Australia for work - I'm an IT consultant. We are able to pick either Sydney or Melbourne to live, and we really don't know much about either. We hear that Melbourne is more like Vancouver with the rain. We have 2 girls under age 10. We're looking for any advice or info anyone could provide that would help us decide.

We're planning on renting out our house, and hopefully renting similar house in Aus for the same amount or less than we'll get for ours - around $2,000/mo $CDN.

Thanks alot!
-Mark

Het there hope this helps what I'm going to tell you. I have been living for 16 years in Australia and now in Nova Scotia and then going to live in Germany, yes i get around Smile anyhow the basic between those 2 cities nare as follows:
Sydney
high humidity, lots of sun, awesome beaches, nice cafes restaurants, a city which never sleeps, but you need to make a good sum of money for renting, house prises and rents are through the roof, check out the Sydney Morning Herald classifieds you will see what I mean.

Melbourne
more like Europe in climate, lots of fun, betweem Melbourne and Syndey I found the people in Sydney more cosmopolitan then in Melbourne but that is my oppinion Smile rents are cheaper. For Melbourne check out The Age for news and classifieds.
hope this helps if you have more questions just ask and gl.

I moved from Vancouver to Melbourne nearly a year ago. I find it quite compairable to Vancouver. I haven't made it to Sydney yet but from what I have been told it is compairable to Toronto. My boyfriend is Australian and grew up in Melbourne, lived in Syd. for a bit and 3 years in Vancouver. From all 3 he perfers Vancouver lol.but out of the 2 he perfers Melbourne. The climate is like Vancouver here but not nearly as much rain! and Syd is much warmer.hope that helps a little?

I am from Vancouver, living in Melbourne now since January.it is a comparable city to Vancouver but not in terms of rain! It doesn't rain much - and definitely not for weeks on end like home! It is one of the colder cities in Oz, that's for sure, but even now, the beginning of winter here if it's sunny it's around 17-20 deg. At night it does drop to around 5 or so deg. My wife and I really enjoy it here.tons of cafes and restaurants, great city for culture. It's very European. From what I hear about Sydney is that's the cosmopolitan/business centre.so if you like fast-paced then that would be your thing. If you want more laid-back (like Vancouver) then Melbourne. Good luck! (PS - I am in IT and there are lots of jobs)

I'm from Vancouver and live between Vancouver and Sydney. You can't go wrong with either city. I've got kids myself. Both Melbourne and Sydney are bigger and have more things going on than Vancouver, but as a parent you'll probably want to find a similar kid friendly neighborhood which both cities have.
