Taking a few classes in the US while on TN

does anyone know if I have to get a student visa just to take 2-3 courses while on a TN?

No, you don't have to. Your primary purpose of stay/visit to the US is employment (on TN status). Therefore, as long as you maintain that intent, you can pursue part time studies. I am doing a MBA part time in Detroit while on TN.
