Quick question regarding taking a car on a lease for a short visit to Canada.

My husband has a leased company car(in the name of the company) that he can drive also for personal use. He has some meetings in Toronto in few weeks and he wanted to drive for that week to Toronto. Can he take the car across the border like that or does he have to have someone's permission to do so?

I am getting conflicting answers so I wanted to know if someone else has been in this situation.

The quoted thread addresses the question of re-entering the USA but perhaps the original poster is also concerned about entering Canada. I know Canadian residents cannot take US rental cars into Canada (the car will be confiscated) but I do not know how/if the rules change if the Canadian has a long-term/permanent US visa, if it is a leased car, or if the employer is actually the one on the paperwork.

This is the first time we would drive across the border. We fly most of the time. We are here on H1B/H4 visas, my husband's car is registered in the name of the company he works for and he is going for business to Toronto. So the reason why I asked this question is in case we get some whacko at either the Canadian or the US side of the border so we know what to say.

I would personally go to the district manager of the company and ask just to be on the safe side for a letter stating that he may drive the vehicle in the US and Canada while on business, this will help if there is any question or concern, at least he has it if they ask if he has permission, if the vehicle is not in his name, better safe then sorry!

It mentions that, CBSA might have a problem with a Canadian bringing in a US-plated vehicle, doesn't matter whether it's owned, leased or rented.

Having said that one of my neighbours works in the US and has a California-plated van sitting in the driveway.

It's really hard to give any guidance on this one, depends on what mood they're in, they have the discretion to believe you or not to believe you.
