I've been here for about 20 months and definately have not lost my accent. I cannot get my tongue the way they say things here (like skipping all the middle letters of a word). I do, however, use a lot more "Britishisms" otherwise people look at me like I am a daft cow! Laughing

I've been here 5 years now, and my friends in Canada tell me I sound more English, but my friends here say I still sound Canadian.

Apparently you can develop a mid-Atlantic accent which just confuses both. Smile

My wife tells me though that within 30 minutes of touching down in Canada and talking I am right back sounding Canadian. Smile

My husband and I and our two oldest kids haven't picked up a Brit accent but our vocabulary has definitely changed! You don't really have a choice or else people don't always understand what you are talking about or just look at you strangely.can't tell you the number of times I went into shops (see, not stores.haha) asking for help looking for "pants", when I should have been asking for trousers! Laughing Our almost 9 year old daughter could easily pass for a proper little Oxfordshire child and our little one, almost 4, is picking up an accent now that he is at preschool.EEK! My parents chuckle every time they are over for a visit at how bizarre our family sounds now! People who know me well now finally agree with me that I DON'T sound like I'm from the U.S., they can now hear the difference.phew! LOL

All that said, my official favourite British word is: "Bollocks", hands down!

Hey everyone!

I've been AWOL for a while because of travelling, but just flew back to Canada last night!

I am totally hearing the accent again, and it's kind of funny. While I didn't live in the UK, I got used to speaking very clearly and annunciating every word, and knowing that whoever I was speaking to was probably only understanding half of what I said since they wouldn't really speak English.

So anyways I have people here telling me now that I have a bit of an accent, just because I'm prnouncing words very clearly. But I'm sure by the end of the day I'll be back to normal Laughing

I've been living in the country since 1994 (When i was 13) and I still haven't lost the accent. Like the above, I use a lot of British slang and words like 'innit', but thats just from going to school in North London.

A new development for me is that I've started going a little bit cockney since I've started seeing my girlfriend. God knows what I'll be like in a few years.

I realised recently that I'm a foreigner in two countries now. In Canada, I'm sure I would be considered English and here I'm definately Canadian.
