Tax liabilities for expat canadians

Post Sun Sep 30, 2007 10:15 am

I am an expat Canadian and working in South Asia. I am paying taxes here. I don't claim for any benefits/tax refund from Canadian Government and don't submit my tax return there at all. Am I obliged to submit a tax return in Canada while having no connections there for the last 3 years now.

If you have any money, RRSPs, or property still in Canada, you must file taxes there. If you have no financial ties at all, then you're good. Did you let them know you were leaving when you filed your last return?

You can get away with a bank account, provided you've notified the bank and you get an NR-4 at the end of the year. If you get a T-4, the CRA will consider you resident for tax purposes. However Canada is virtually unique in charging non-resident tax of 10% on any interest you earn, so it's generally not a good idea to keep any money in Canada if you can.

I read on the canada revenue agency's website on the page for emigrants that you pay 25% on interests earned while a non-resident. See part XIII tax.
