TAX OWED ABROAD

I was in australia on a holiday working visa in 2006. I filled my taxes myself and calculated that the Oz gov't owed me 2000$. They have since randomly done an audit on my account and say that I was only owed 1500$ - so I now owe them 500$, according to them. They do not offer an explanation into this miscalculation.

What will happen if I do not pay this? will they come after me in the country I am presently residing in . I have none of my old paper work (stupid i know), so i can not refute their claim.

What should I do? What is the worst that can happen if I do not pay? Is it just worth paying it?

They could. Oz and canada have a tax treaty which allows each to help the other collect. They apparently know where you are. On such a small sum, would they bother? Then again, on such a small sum, why would you risk the trouble?

Based on what my friend was telling me about the Australian tax and immigration systems I would pay it. I could explain in arcane IT terms why but suffice to say it is possible to link the two together. Not sure if they are but it would only take an LDAP query and I'm sure temporary residents are probably tagged using an attribute, so suffice to say if you ever visited Australia again you could run into a problem.
