taxable Moving expenses assistance package

Post Thu Apr 08, 2010 10:26 am

I am a Canadian working in California for almost 1.5 years now. My company gave me a moving assistance package, which I used for my initial lodging in a hotel for 10 days while I was looking for an apartment to rent during November 2008 . The hotel charge was about 2400 usd (all paid by my company )

This year I received my 2009 W2 , and the moving expenses ( 2400 usd ) is part of the gross pay amount on the W2.
My company explains to me that the amount is taxable in US.

Is the moving expenses assistance amount taxable in Canada ?

Well, since you moved, and shoudl not be paying tax in Canada, it is no more taxable than the rest of your wages.
