Taxes on TN Visa

Postby cyberpass » Sat Oct 06, 2007 9:48 pm

Hey all,

Hypothetical situation: Someone who works for a multinational corporation(Canada and US) gets sent to the US to work for 6 months. He successfully gets a TN visa and begins working in the US division. He continues to get paid in CAD$ which is directly deposited in his Canadian bank account. federal&ontario taxes are automatically taken off his payments. So its tax time now.does he still need to file both taxes? If yes, doesnt he need to get a SSN?(how do u even get one?) What if he stays longer than 6 months? Also, if he does file american taxes, then wouldnt that mean he pays cold hard cash to the american side then wait for the tax credits to kick in before he gets his money back again? Will the americans even know if he doesnt file taxes?

You go to the SSA office to apply for an SSN. Take your passport and your visa with you, you'll need those for the application.

However, if the Canadian division is paying you in CAD direct to your Canadian bank account, you probably don't need to do that. Only if the US office is paying you in US dollars would you need to do that I think.

Check with a tax accountant to be sure, or the HR manager at the office who is paying you.
