Taxes2009?: US Citizen / CAN PR - worked in both countries

Post Wed Mar 24, 2010 8:36 pm

Here's my situation: I am a US Citizen married to a Canadian. After college, I received my permanent resident status in Canada. I was living and working in Canada 11 months in 2009. In December, I got a contract job within the US at a company in Washington and will be moving back North after it is finished (I moved down by myself). How do I go about filing my taxes for 2009? I have heard that there is some sort of tax treaty between US and Canada. I am just lost as to what i need to file for both countries, and don't want to end up paying double taxes. Thanks for the help, I am just very confused at where to start.

As a US citizen, you willalways file a US yax return, wherever you live, reporting ALL income.

As a Cdn resident (you are stila a resident, sicne your deparure is short-term, it appears), so you file a returm in canada too, reporting ALL income.
Thta's when it gets complicated.
