Postby cg » Wed Aug 27, 2008 7:16 am

hi everyone! im new to this and im very excited because it seems like a great way to get help and to help others who may be in similar situations.

I just graduated from teachers college in Toronto and i am looking to teach in new york.
any ideas on what steps i have to take in order to be qualified to teach in the US as well as what types of visas i should be applying for?

thanks in advance!

Can't comment on the qualifications but you need H-1B. Colleges are exempt from the quota (not schools) and it's a fair amount of paperwork they have to do to sponsor you. It's valid for three years and can be renewed for another three provided you have "advanced" in the job. And that's it, unless they want to sponsor you for permanent residency.

The current wait time for EB-3 skilled worker if they sponsor you for LPR status (the most likely category you would be in) is 3.5 years, so you need to get cracking on that pretty soon after you enter as H-1B.

You might qualify for EB-2 if the job requires a master's degree and you have one, that is quicker to process. Depends on the exact nature of the job as well.
