Yes, usually you can use your Canadian licence from a legal standpoint (although some States might insist on a local licence), however insurance companies usually want to see a local licence or at least a licence issued somewhere in the US. I strongly suggest you get a copy of your insurance abstract to take with you, and a copy of your list of traffic offenses from the DMV.
Either way you will probably need them and if you can't get a local licence it will help with the insurance.
State laws usually say something along the lines of, you must get a licence within x number of days of becoming resident in the State. However as TN-1 is for temporary workers, technically you don't become a resident of the State unless you do resident type things, such as filing a resident tax return in the US.
