Thanksgiving

Post Tue Oct 04, 2005 12:43 am

Just out of curiosity, what are everyone's plans for Thanksgiving? Last year it slipped by me and I realized a week too late that I'd missed it. This year I've made a Canadian friend who has another Canadian friend, and we're getting together with our British significant others to celebrate a proper, traditional Thanksgiving. Turkey, roast parsnips, garlic mash, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie, all preceded by the traditional (in our families anyway) "going-around-the-table-each-giving-thanks-for-whatever". Kind of a surrogate family at Thanksgiving, and I'm really looking forward to it. I even have some spicy Clamato for a few caesars beforehand.

I work with 3 other Canadians in my office and I am trying to organize a little celebration at work organized by the Canucks.

Somehow this holiday has just snuck up on me and I could have missed it!

My Thanksgiving was lovely. 3 Canadians who all met in England, and 2 Englishmen both celebrating Thanksgiving for the first time. Big ol' turkey (we ate less than 1/2!), and my pumpkin pie went down like gangbusters. As usual, the turkey took longer to cook than we anticipated, but then that's almost tradition now. My only regret is that every single one of us forgot to bring a camera.

So now that's it's the official day, I'd just like to say:

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I'm thankful to have found fellow Canadians in real life and online who make the stay here feel a little less lonely.

Making a pumpkin pie was quite an ordeal here! I asked for pumpkin pie filling at Sainsbury's and they looked at me like I was from Mars. Then I asked for pre-made pie crusts and they about wet their pants. (A group of them, pointing and snickering at my requests). "Condensed milk" I said, "please tell me you have that at least have condensed milk!" Finally sucess!

So anyway, I used real pumkins, which were hard to find, had to make my own crust, it took me half the day!

But I brought it to work and although everyone thought it odd, it was enjoyed by all.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Wow, I thought I had troubles getting my pumpkin pie together. Condensed milk was a problem last year, but this year they had evaporated milk at my local Tesco. As for the pumpkin, I bought 4 cans last year online from Canada Shop in London. I didn't bother with the ready-made pie crust, as I wanted to try my hand at it once more, after years of leaving it to the professionals at Pillsbury.

Mmmmm...squash. We had some oven-roasted butternut squash infused with real maple syrup. I'd never tried the recipe before, and my friend made it this time. Heaven.
