That pissed me off! Am I in the wrong?

Postby toronto5481 » Thu Oct 15, 2009 7:57 am

So I go to a conference for work yesterday and some guy comes up to me and says, hey, are you the girl from Toronto? I'm Canadian too! So from the way he struggles in English I'm thinking, ok he's an immigrant from Asia, he's become a citizen, is happily living in Canada and is here for the conference. I asked him, Oh cool. where in Canada do you live?

He replies, " I'm a Canadian Citizen but well, I was born and raised in China, came to Toronto for 3 years, acquired citizenship and now I'm here on a TN and looking for a way to get a green card. I thought it would be easier to come to the US via Canada"

Now that really pissed me off

A- Dont call yourself a Canadian if you've barely spent 3 years in my country

B- Dont ever say you're Canadian if all you did was use us to get to America :smt011

I excused myself and went to talk to some other people.

Unfortunately, this is what many people do to acquire U.S citizenship. People who migrate to Canada usually do so because they had no previous luck in the U.S. Given the long wait a person of Chinese descent has to wait for their visa from the U.S., their option would be to go through Canada first. It's very sad but true.

Even if he is on a TN, he cannot show immigrant intent so his antics may bite him where it hurts when the time comes. :-|

C'mon you guys don't think everyone does it? I am an immigrant and a Canadian too you have no idea how happy i am to be a Canadian. I know of many immigrant Chinese, indians , Pakistanis who became Canadian Citizen and are now extremely happy in Canada.

Just recently my company (canadian) asked me if i knew a friend who can work in the US. I asked two of my buddies who want a job badly but they don't want to move to the US and they are single.

To quote one of my friend, i need a job badly but i'd rather eat dirt then to move to the US. Ironically he has done his masters from the US.

Dremani: You don't really think that an immigrant in the US first file for Canadian immigration wait for a year or two to get approved then spends 1060 days in Canada just to go back to the US on a TN and then applies for a Green card? I don't understand how is this simple?

Thanks

You know, I said many people not everybody. All I'm saying is that I agree with what toronto.. is saying because I hear about it a lot and think it's quite sad.

Yes there are many anti-americans in Canada who choose not to move to the U.S. and that's great. But many people all over the world do this because lets face it, the opportunities are greater in the U.S.

And YES. A lot of people will do whatever they have to for a green card even if it means to wait 1060 days. It's the golden ticket don't you know that? It's the path to U.S. citizenship..etc

I'm glad you share my views, Dreamani...the whole thing made me so mad.

Junoon: my post was NEVER meant to imply immigrants are bad! I have many immigrant friends and Canada is a dirversified and welcoming country. What I'm talking about is people who USE us to get to where they're going. There are many reasons why taxes are so high in Canada and most of them are because of our social services. If you're an immigrant, then you'll use those for 3 years then move to the USA once you're done with us???

My family has been paying Canadian taxes since 1897 or something like that lol and I'm sick of seeing Canadian tax dollars going down the drain because they're being wasted on foreigners using our kindness and welcoming spirit as Canadians.

Lawrlaws made a comment a while back about seeing so many immigrants using Canada as a viapoint to the US. He said he saw it EVERYDAY down at the POE with TN applications, TN applicants who dont speak English and used the Canadian system to get into the States...

I've just come to realize its WAY too easy to immigrate to Canada. Canadian citizenship should only be available to permanent residents after 5 years like here in the US, not 2 years. You wanna move to Canada, fine. But stay and put in your tax dollars in the system like the rest of us.

200,000 plus immigrant every year migrate to Canada, some go to work in the US it seems normal.

I disagree i think it takes the normal amount of time for a immigrant to migrate i think it takes around 2-3 years if your migrating from country such as India a little less time if you are migrating from the US>

I think it takes 3 years before you get your passport in Canada its not 2 though. It took me 5 years well i was just a bit lazy and wasn't in a hurry at all.

Toronto: its not a one way street getting 200,000 plus immigrant to Canada is also a plus for Canada. You get 200,000 brains and then you let them loose they either work or create jobs, i personally know of a few immigrants who moved to Canada and first they did was to buy a house, little thing like this effect the Canadian economy.

Now granted i also know of a few immigrants who try to take advantage of the Canadian system, like trying to avoid paying taxes or finding a magical accountant who can show them some magical way of not paying taxes, the reason why some of them do it is because they did it in their respective country and got away with it. Don't worry once they get caught and have to pay hefty fines, they'll learn and will warn the future immigrants

Its a on going process.

Sorry i posted something earlier but couldn't see it.

I wasn't going to post here anymore, but I can't help myself on this one.

I see this BS everyday. There are waaay too many people that are on TN's in the USA that just got their Canadian citizenship. We see it all the time. No respect for Canada or the USA, only care about what each country can do for them. India is the worst. H1B and TN's galore. They get their LPR card and then cradle all three countries to reap the benefits...ie...Free medical from Canada and the US social security. Makes me sick. If you don't think this happens everyday, your in denial. Im not slinging mud, only telling personal experience.

Oh and for the record, Im NOT stating that everyone does it and im not picking on anyone from India. im simply stating a fact that is backed up by refusal/casework.

First and far most welcome back, we have always valued your advice and its been a void seems like Steven is busy as well and we don't see him here but its nice to see you back.

Laws you have to give them some time.I myself am from Pakistan and the politician over the years, have managed to screw up this country, no health care no jobs, no human value, people have come to a point where they just want to get out and when they come to Canada or US the last thing on their mind is feelings and laws, they realize that their life has passed and they just want to do something for their children .

Compare the immigrant of today to the ones who came here 30 years ago, time will make them learn, however i think 100 years from now on some other MSG board someone will post something similar i am sure of that.
