The best city to move to in the UK?

My husband and I are planning a move to the England in the next 8 months or so. This June we are going on a 2 week "scouting" trip to check out a few places we may want to eventually move. O...

I lived in Edinburgh from 1998-2000. It was fantastic. My wife and I are going back on Ancestry visas (we hope) this fall. We're looking at either Edinburgh/Fife if I can get my old RBS job back, or near some mates in Crewe. Crewe is nice, as well as Stoke (on-Trent) in Staffordshire. You're close enough to Manchester or Birmingham and the cost of living is slightly lower depending on where you are. Exempting London, anywhere to me in reality is inexpensive; it just depends on how you live your lifestyle. I don't expect to own a car and own a home as big as we have now. I find some people tend to forget that Europe is a heck of a lot more modest than us us North Americans- at least that's my opinion anyways.

I'm another Vancouver Islander giving thought to the UK for work/living when I turn 50 (early pension then). I lived in Cardiff, S. Wales for a year in the early 90's and really enjoyed it. About 300,000 (similar size to Victoria) with a lot of economic development and a fairly young demographic. Vibrant pub and arts scene and the Cardiff Devils (in case you miss hockey). A short drive out of town to the Vale of Glamorgan and there are some lovely green spaces and small villages facing the ocean.

My other period of living/working in the UK was a summer in London (Battersea) in 2002. I was shocked at how humid it was and of course lodging is very expensive - but you can entertain yourself quite well on a limited budget once you buy a bus pass - lots of free stuff and many pubs offer good low priced meals.
