the next steps : after TN and crossing borders

Post Sun Feb 01, 2009 5:31 pm

I recieved TN, I crossed the border, I started to work, I opened a bank account with Wells without SSN, I applied for SSN, I waited for 5 weeks to have it, finaly I recieve it. what to do next to be in compliance with all the regulations of Canad and of USA concerning taxes, adresses, children, wife,...

I read many topics in the forum, but honestly sometimes I get lost because of the big quantity of info. and sometimes subjects repeated many times in differents ways. can somebody gives us some of his precious time and tells us very specifically the next steps related to:
-taxes, what to do with taxes, tax returns, which is best way
-adresse in Canada, keep residency there, move it here
-bank accounts here and there
-situation of children
-what a TD wife can do to work here
-expert tips that I miss
-..

thanks a lot in advance for your help

You must have non-immigrant intent to be in TN-1 and the simplest way to show that is to have residential ties to Canada. Some sort of proof you intend on coming back to Canada and you intend to only be temporarily in the US.

So having a Canadian address helps with that, although it's very subjective as to what CBP construes to be "non-immigrant intent".

Your wife and children cannot work on TD, but they can go to school.

If you're filing in the US as a non-resident (which you probably will be), you need to file a W-8BEN with your US bank.

This CRA publication gives an overview of how the tax filing works, it really depends though on how long you plan on being in the US:
