The relation between Canada and the US

Post Fri Oct 31, 2008 7:12 am

Canada and the US have a close relation in their history but what do you think about this "close relation"? Is Canada on equal footing with The US? :?:

Canada and the US do not have a close relationship in their past, quite the opposite, hence the war of 1812. It wasn't really until WW2 that things changed. Before that there were endless trade wars and efforts by the US to absorb Canada, disagreements about the border, etc. If you think Canada and the US get along well I suggest you visit Point Roberts, WA and see how petty things can get.

Nowadays the US education system appears to be so poor that no-one knows anything about Canada: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhTZ_tgMUdo

So I wouldn't worry about it.
Steve.

And in foreign countries, generally speaking, Canadians and Canada are looked upon more favourably than Americans and the US.

It appears that Canada and the US co-operated on immigration as far back as 1894, though:

I love the comments by people that dont live here *L*

The relationship as far as business is concerned is very close, the NAFTA trade agreement was the u.s. attempt to get access to Canadas resources and Mexicos labour, it also weakened Canadas regulations, something the u.s. has been tryiing to do for awhile.

On a social level Canadians generally dislike Americans, thats not to say they dont like the people but rather they detest the American government and dislike American preoccupation with money and guns and individualism over the betterment of all.

As for culture we are nearly indistinguishable, we both like the same movies (though Americans go for the big explosion type films more then Canadians) and Canada is known as a deep well that America draws comedians, artists and of course writers.

Canada has regularly chastised the u.s., we refused to help in Iraq, many of our leaders called Bush an idiot and said he was stupid (that was too obvious to miss) and in general, like I said Canadians dont really like American attitudes and find their government to be a bunch of radical right wing extremists.

As a Canadian who currently lives in the US, I would beg to differ on that statement. Culturally, Canadians and Americans differ quite a lot.
