There are various instances of people trying to open up franchises in the
UK and elsewhere that are popular in their home countries. Usually they are heavily subsidised and usually the home company owns at least the first outlet.
Domino's Pizza is a good example, they opened up their own stores then franchised them in the UK.
Subway have also been successful.
Wendy's wasn't, and as a result, Tim Horton's wasn't. Dunkin' Donuts also bit the dust. However apparently Krispy Kreme are going to try.
Red Lobster also tried and failed. McDonald's and Burger King have been ridiculously successful.
KFC nearly failed until they came up with a completely different menu for the UK.
