There are various instances of people trying to open up franchises in the UK and elsewhere that are popular in their home countries. Usually they are heavily subsidised and usually the home company owns at least the first outlet.

Domino's Pizza is a good example, they opened up their own stores then franchised them in the UK.

Subway have also been successful.

Wendy's wasn't, and as a result, Tim Horton's wasn't. Dunkin' Donuts also bit the dust. However apparently Krispy Kreme are going to try.

Red Lobster also tried and failed. McDonald's and Burger King have been ridiculously successful.

KFC nearly failed until they came up with a completely different menu for the UK.

There is a new Tim Hortons in London. The kiosk is in SPAR on 58 Haymarket Street.

Enjoy!

They seem to be popping up in Spars - with coffee kiosks and doughnuts so look there!

Hmm. so apparently separating Wendy's and Tim's had some benefit.

On the Canadian Expats forums, there's a whole thread on this stuff- apparently there's some in Scotland too. I think someone came up with a whole list, I'll have to check it out.

After watching Canada lose to Russia in the WC's i was walking up to Picadilly Circus to get the tube. I literally did a triple take when I looked in the Spar on Haymarket and saw a beautiful display of Tim Hortons Doughnut boxes and coffee cups. It was breath taking. Similar to the first time I saw the houses of parliament or St. Pauls cathedral. After wiping the tears of dis-belief from my eyes I had to take a photo. With knee's shaking and buterflies in my stomach i mustered the courage to enter the store, but was disappointed to find out they didn't have freshly brewed coffee. They did however, have a self service coffee/cappuccino machine. As it was 11pm I wasn't in the mood to be disappointed by a fake Tim Hortons coffee, so I passed. I will however go back this weekend. I'll keep you posted
