Time takes to get L1 Petition number?

Hello,

I am a citizen of India and my wife is citizen of Canada. She is just got her L1 visa at port of entry and now I wanna go to US on L2 but I am not able to make my appointment with US consulate until she gets her petition number. Does any one knows how long it takes to get petition number for my case? Thank You.

She is never going to get a petition number: she has an I-94 issued in L1 status, and that is what you use at the consulate. They know this.

Your spouse has no further dealings with immigration at this point.

Thats true that she has I-94 for L1 but I am citizen of India so I need to go to US consulate to get my visa for that I need to make an appointment with them. For that I tried to fill DS-160 and even tried to make an appointment with them they require petition number. On phone they said you will get she will get petition number by mail but they were not sure how long its gonna take...

Obviously, they are misinformed, due to the special circumstances of having a Cdn spouse. Are you dealing wit ha consulate outside canada?

All non-Cdn spouses of Cns with TN and L1 (which are almost always received at the border) are fully able to follw the DS-160 process without a petition number.

Your wife will never get a petition number. period. She has an L1 I-94, and that is it.

Thanks for your reply but I tried to submit my DS-160 without entering petition number but it did not go thru, Petition number in DS-160 is mandatory field, try to check their website for it since it has been change from September 1st 2010

This is what it says on that website...

Enter the required petition information for each applicant. If the applicant is a family member applying for a derivative visa, enter the same information as the primary applicant.
You can find this information either in the upper left corner of the Notice of Action/Approval, Form I-797 or from the e-mail notification that the petition was approved. The petition number is alpha-numeric, starting with the first three letters EAC, WAC, LIN or SRC, followed by 10 numeric digits, and is listed on the form under the field labeled 'Receipt Number'. Example: EAC-12-345-67890

Then I guess every other Cdn spouse did not enter leaglly.

Yourwife does not hoave, nor will she get a petition number, or I-797.

Then please you suggest what I should do?? How to make an appointment with US consulate? and I think my case is bit different since my wife is Canadian and I am not so I need to go to consulate to get my visa.Please help me.

Contact the consulate and tell them. Explain that your spouse is Cdn and got her L1 at the border and will not get a petition number.

This is not an immgration site, ask at one of those.

Thanks for your help but I did receive the copy I-797C with petition/receipt number day before yesterday. Just to let readers know about it....

Was that for a second L1 petition filed in December (which would have been a waste fof money), or was that for your wife's L2?
