Hi everyone,

I have an urgent question. I am planning to start work on April 28th with an employer in the states but I need to get my TN before I give notice to my current employer (2 weeks). The employers lawyers are telling me its my decision, they cannot guarantee the permit but should have no problem but its my decision to give my notice.

What happens if I give my notice and then don't get the permit? What are my options? Is there any way for me to get the permit a few weeks before starting work? . apparently not? Surprise me?

If you get the offer letter, you can go to any border entry to get a TN first before you resign. You don't need a lawer

You can go to the border approximately 1 to 2 wks before your new job starts to obtain your TN visa.
Your best option is to determine if how subjective your TN case is. If you have an accountant degree and you're applying for an accounting position, its a pretty clear case and your chances of success are very high. Ask your lawyer their thoughts and based on this you may decide to leave your job or not.

Good Luck.

Hi there Chosen80, did you apply for your TN 2 weeks before your start date or did you take the risk and resign first? Also, what was your port of entry (border crossing or airport)?

Hi there,

I apologize for the delay in responding. I actually gave notice, worked two weeks, left work on a Friday, commutted to Seattle on a Saturday and started work on Monday.

My port of entry was Truck Crossing in Cloverdale, Surrey, BC, Canada. ADVICE: Take your RESUME. It was a simple process, I forgot my resume and the guy hassled me a little but he was just bugging me. Make sure you make copies of everything, including your resume, passport, credentials and your TN letter. One for you, one for them.

Good luck!
