Hi folks. Well, I'm not Canadian, Kiwi in fact, but thought it'd be worth a shot posting here. I spent a year in Toronto few years back, and really enjoyed it - haven't been able to shake my obession for the place since. Would love to immigrate there, however, I'm not classified as a "skilled worker" making it somewhat impossible, unless I find myself a Canadian husband (any volunteers?). Just curious if anyone has any ideas about increasing my chances of immigrating, or cheating the system. I currently work as a coordinator of a community centre (somewhat an admin/jack-of-all-trades sort of role), am 27 years old and have a sister that has lived there for 15 years.

p.s. I'm always up for meeting Canucks living in Wellington, NZ, so if you're bored/homesick/whatever, gimmie a buzz!

Work permit - you need a Canadian employer. The job has to be in an approved category: http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/en/home.shtml

Having a job already in Canada helps with the points to get permanent residency. There are "employment agencies" that can help place you with an employer in Canada but at the moment the Govt. is cracking down on them because they charge fees to prospective employees which is illegal, only the employer can be charged.

There is a desperate need for trades people in Canada, but mostly in Alberta and Saskatchewan. The housing market has been slacking off lately so I'm not sure how much luck you would have in Ontario.

The City of Calgary is also absolutely desperate for staff in various trade positions (mostly mechanics and landscaping staff, but there other jobs going), if a municipality sponsors you for a work permit it's a pretty straightforward process.

Hey steve,
Thanks for the info. Unfortunately my 'profession' doesn't really fit the bill so it's back to the drawing board I guess. Or back to the mail order Canadian grooms.

Thanks
anna
