Hi Folks,

I will be moving to the U.S as a TN-er for a year (at least initially). I was wondering if somebody can answer a couple of questions w.r.t OHIP

1, Do I have to inform the Ministry of Health of my departure ? or fill out any forms ?

2, Will I still be covered by OHIP for some duration of time even AFTER moving to the U.S ?

Thanks in advance

I advised the Ministry of Health when I left and had to fill out a form and mail it to them.

I did not advise the ministry of health, but I also did not advise them when I left for Manitoba either. You are supposedly covered for a period of time after you leave but we were not sure on that. The other issue is OHIP will only cover the Canadian cost (i.e. you break a leg, it costs 6000 to fix in the US but 3000 in Canada, OHIP would pay 3000, if at all, since you have moved).

What we did was went to a travel agent and bought travel insurance (like you would get if you were going on vacation). It was to be used as a "filler" in between our coverage between OHIP and our Blue Cross insurance, it was abotu $1000 for 12 months (we got a year just in case we had trouble), and would cover any major issues we got into. Once our Blue Cross came through we were able to cancel it (after about a month) and get a refund for about $800 worth (there were some issues with not coming back to canada to get the refund but the travel agent cleared all that up.

If you don't have company medical insurance with your new job, I reccomend signing up for it before you leave Canada, there are some snags with respect to having no SSN at first and all that but after you find the plan you want the people on the phone can clear that up, and you can do it before you leave Canada. The only reason we got the Travel Insurance was we had not been approved by Blue Cross before we started on the drive down.
