TN - 1 Month before?

Post Mon May 03, 2010 4:09 pm

Hello All,

I need some advice: my actual start date is in 4 weeks. Of those 4 weeks, there are two during which I will be overseas, so I would like to get my TN Visa this week or next, so that I dont worry and get anxious about it and leave it to the last minute, especially since I have to give my 2 weeks notice at current job (by next Monday, at the latest, to be professional).

Do you know if there is any ways I will be granted TN status if all my paperwork is in order, that much time in advance? Or do they only grant it a few days before? Should I explain the situation and the travelling to the PEO? Will it even make a difference? I'll be going to the Champlain, NY PE....

Thanks!!

Explaining will actually make it worse.

What you need to do is set up a telecon meeting with your employer for right after your meeting with CBP (in a coffee shop just accross the border), to discuss some work matters.

That way, when you present your papers (they should not have a start date) and they ask you if you are reporting fpor work, you can truthfully say yes.

They may indeed ask, and if you do as I outlined, you will give them a satisfactory answer and get your TN. If you tell them 4 weeks , they will likely say come back later.

Even if your letter had a specific start date, the TN issued to you would be based on the date of crossing, not the date on the letter.
That is why a start date on the letter id of little value, and often hinders.

I really apreciate you taking the time to respond. Do you mind explain a bit more how/why the PEO would consider that response as sufficient to give me the TN now? Have you tried it yourself?

Thanks again and sorry for all the questions :)

I was not putting in question whether it does work or not or suggesting I had a better plan --otherwise I would not have sought advice on here.I was hoping to get a more detailed explanation as to why it works. So there was truly no need to get snappy.

Thank you for your time in any case.

Don't think of it as snappy. Think of getting years of expeience distilled into breif, clear, concise answers.

And this is not the best palcxe to ask TN questions:

her is a better one:
